Nice weather about to end as another storm heads to north state

CHICO — With the official start of spring just a few days away, March continues to present some decidedly winter-like conditions to Northern California.

Following a period of some wet weather into early Tuesday, the Chico Regional Airport experienced some extremely pleasant conditions with highs of 61 Tuesday and Wednesday, 63 Thursday and 64 Friday. Things were equally nice at Oroville Municipal Airport, rising to 64 degrees Wednesday, 63 Thursday and 67 Friday.

Forecast highs today were set to be 67 in Chico and 68 in Oroville, according to the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office.

All that will change, however, with increasing clouds today and more rain — and wind — predicted to arrive late tonight or early Sunday.

The first punch from this system will bring rain to the Sacramento Valley, moderate snow to the Sierra Nevada range and breezy conditions all around. Another system will bring valley and foothill rain, moderate mountain snow and lower snow levels Tuesday and Wednesday.

Snow levels are forecast to be around 5,000 to 6,000 feet Sunday through Monday morning, dropping to 3,000 to 4,000 feet Tuesday into Wednesday with the heaviest snow falling Tuesday. A weaker system could bring light snow Thursday into Friday.

For folks in the lower elevations, they should expect periods of light to moderate showers, with the heaviest rains Sunday through Monday morning. Another dose of rain is likely Tuesday into Wednesday, heaviest Tuesday.

In all areas, residents should brace for gusty southerly and southwesterly winds reaching 30 mph.

Chico will see slightly cooler conditions over the next few days, reaching highs of 56 Sunday, 59 Monday, 54 Tuesday, 57 Wednesday and 59 Thursday. Lows will be 46 Sunday night, 43 Monday night, 43 Tuesday night, and 41 Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Oroville’s will be about the same: 55 Sunday, 57 Monday, 54 Tuesday, 56 Wednesday and 57 Thursday, with 48 Sunday night, 45 Monday night, 54 Tuesday night, 56 Wednesday night and 57 Thursday night.
